Where to start
Which more tropical fruit to plant first
One-of-a-kind trees. UF/IFAS has written up several of them for South Florida; Pasco County is colder, so cold tolerance decides what goes in the ground here and what stays in a pot. The tender ones: abiu (young trees killed below 32°F, mature trees hurt at 29 to 31°F), achachairu (its tolerance near freezing hasn't been studied, and seedlings take 7 to 8 years to fruit), cacao (damage below 50°F; UF/IFAS calls South Florida 'very marginal'), rollinia (brief dips near 30°F without losing the tree), Malay apple (leaf damage at temperatures well above freezing) and miracle fruit (not frost tolerant; UF/IFAS suggests a container outside South Florida). Nance: Morton's Fruits of Warm Climates says the flavor varies from insipid to sweet, acid or cheese-like, and gives no cold figure. Black Suriname cherry: UF/IFAS lists Eugenia uniflora as invasive in south Florida and a species of caution in central Florida and does not recommend it; ask before you plant one. The five below have the best published record for a central Florida yard.

Grumichama
UF/IFAS (HS41): a large shrub or small tree of 20 to 25 ft; fruit ½ to 1 inch, scarlet to purple-black, with soft, sweet flesh and an excellent flavor; matures April to May; 2 to 3 years to fruit from seed; grown in south Florida and protected spots in central Florida. Gene Joyner: mature plants tolerate 26°F without serious difficulty.

Cherry of the Rio Grande
UF/IFAS (HS41): the most cold tolerant of its group, so it can be grown farther north; a small tree of about 15 ft; dark red or purple fruit, ¾ to 1 inch, juicy with a good subacid flavor, April to June; may fruit in the third year. Gene Joyner (Palm Beach County Extension): tolerates 20°F without being killed; die-back of small branches, cause unknown, is its one real problem.

Miracle Fruit
UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions: the berry makes sour food taste sweet for about fifteen minutes to an hour. A slow-growing bush that stays small in Florida; not frost tolerant, so outside South Florida grow it in a container you can bring in on freeze nights; mildly acid soil (pH about 5); fruiting starts around the third year.

Peanut Butter Fruit
UF/IFAS Extension St. Lucie County: slightly juicy, sweet fruit that resembles peanut butter in flavor and aroma, eaten fresh or as jam. A tree of about 23 to 26 ft that can be pruned smaller; mature trees handle about 28°F, young ones need freeze protection; fruit in 2 to 3 years from seed; well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.

Strawberry Tree
UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County: zones 9b to 11, a shrub or small tree with small sweet fruit that tastes like cotton candy, nearly year-round with a spring-to-summer peak. Weak branches that break, so prune the long ones. It has been reported to naturalize and has not yet been assessed by UF/IFAS.
